My Philosophy
-
The relationship between therapist and client is the best indicator of how successful therapy will be for someone.
-
Because of this, my priority as your therapist is to build a trusting and safe environment for you. I implement a client-centered approach, which means that I believe that the client is the expert of themselves and their world, and although I may be an expert in psychology, I am not an expert in the individual client. Therapy, therefore, is a collaborative effort between the therapist and client.
-
-
I use elements of various humanist, sociological, and behavioral therapeutic approaches in my practice.
-
Being a humanist means that I believe that all humans have the capacity for change and growth. I believe that your life can be different, it can be full of joy and peace, even if it never has been before.
-
To look through a sociological lens means that I understand that we do not exist in a void and that systemic and historical factors affect our lives and struggles. It is not enough to pay attention to what is directly happening in a client’s life, but also factors outside of their control that contribute to and, sometimes, create the difficult lives clients are living. This is especially important for clients who are part of marginalized communities.
-
The behavioral approach is to look at all human behaviors (internal and external) not as morally good or bad, right or wrong, but from a functional standpoint. Especially for disabled clients, I believe in accommodation over assimilation- learning how to accommodate to yourself and your needs rather than how to best be “normal.”
-
-
I believe that each client is their own unique human and deserves an individualistic approach.
-
That means I cater my treatment to the person rather than the diagnosis or issue. It is imperative for all clients, but especially for clients from marginalized groups, that systemic and historical factors are taken into consideration
-
-
I strive to be loving, gentle, patient, transparent, and genuine with my clients.
Philosophy TL;DR
-
Clients are given individualized treatments
-
All clients have the possibility of a better life
-
Therapy is a collaborative effort between the client and therapist
-
Historical and systematic factors are considered in treatment
